Chapter 22
But as they entered Elizabethâs office, Clarice announced that Kath wished to speak to her.
âSo, sheâs at work!â Elizabeth said, attempting to conceal her frustration.
âYes, and she asked me to let her know when you got back,â Clarice responded.
Elizabeth turned to Olivia, her auntâs concern evident, ready to shield Elizabeth from any potential danger or individual, even Kath.
âLetâs postpone the meeting with Marianne until tomorrow,â Elizabeth suggested. âDonât worry, Iâm fine. I promise Iâm fine,â she added quickly, though her aunt was unconvinced.
âAre you sure you donât want me to wait?â Olivia asked.
âNo.â Elizabethâs firm tone only heightened Oliviaâs concern. She feared the worst, while she hoped that Elizabeth wouldnât lose the battle with her sister for once. The situation was far from the unity they had hoped for after Thomasâs passing. Theyâd wished for the three women to find solace together and uphold the family bond Thomas had built. Yet, Thomasâs death seemed to have increasingly driven a wedge between them rather than fostering understanding or cohesion.

Elizabeth waited for Kath at her desk, half facing the stunning view from her windows.
âLondonâs so beautiful!â Kath exclaimed as she came in. She was dressed casually in jeans and a white shirt, her makeup almost subtle.
Sitting down in front of Elizabeth, Kathâs sadness was palpable, and she didnât make any effort to hide it.
âIâm sorry for what happened at the restaurant,â Kath said unexpectedly. It was unprecedented; Kath never apologised. However, it seemed she had actually recognised the consequences of her actions.
âIf youâre referring to my breakup, thereâs no need to apologise. It likely only sped up the inevitable.â
âYou seemed happy together,â Kath remarked wistfully, while Elizabeth struggled to maintain her composure.
âKath, thereâs an unspoken rule about not discussing our private lives at Collister.â
âOh, donât be so uptight, Lizzy,â she retorted, using Elizabethâs childhood nickname. Still, Elizabeth wasnât in the mood for nostalgia and affection.
âWhat do you really want, Kath?â she asked, instantly regretting her harsh tone. Yet, it had become instinctive when conversing with her sister recently.
âNothing. I want nothing, Elizabeth. I just came to tell you Iâm sorry for any role I may have played in your breakup. But it seems youâre not willing to accept my apologies.â
âIâve told you thereâs nothing to be sorry for. It wasnât your fault.â
âIâm in love, and I want to get married,â Kath suddenly said, and Elizabeth was lost for words. âFinally, Iâve got your attention,â she continued, rising from her seat. âBut talking about such personal matters in your office isnât appropriate apparently.â
And just like that, she was gone, leaving Elizabeth feeling deeply distressed.
Elizabeth didnât wait for Clarice to tell Arthur about her arrival. She barged into his office, hoping to find him there.
âWhatâs happened?â Arthur exclaimed. âI will kill him!â he continued, but Elizabeth shook her head.
âItâs Kath. She just told me that sheâs planning to get married.â And she slumped into the chair across from her uncle. âDad used to say that misery never came aloneâit brought its companions.â
âYour father was wise and too willing to give advice without being asked.
